Acer M900 Smart Phone

Setting up Internet and MMS for Virgin Mobile

This phone had only just been released when I bought it and there was no information forthcoming from either Acer or Virgin Mobile on how to set it up for mobile internet access and for MMS.

The Acer handbook says that it will attempt to auto configure itself, however this did not work. The reason for failure is not clear to me at this time, so here's my best guess: Virgin Mobile is an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) which means they don't actually have a mobile network of their own, and they sit on top of T-Mobile, and the Acer seemed to have attempted to deduce the settings for T-Mobile which did not work.

Here is how I eventually got things to work plus some related tips.

Virgin 3G Internet Settings

JOB DONE

Some Observations

bulletIf a program is using the Connection Settings then the changes will not take effect. It seems to be necessary to close the programs that are using it, bearing in mind that ActiveSync might be holding the settings open and to flip data mode off and on again. To close all the programs, choose the ok icon in the top right (sometimes it just says x) and so close every window until that icon changes to be an icon that looks like a chip that fills up - click on that and the Task Manager will appear - choose the option to end all tasks. To flip data mode then click on the status icons at the top of the screen, then click the signal strength icon and choose Comm Manager and from there you can change the settings.
